DAY THREE SILENT MEDITATION RETREAT

October 13, 2009 (I felt bored.)

I woke up to the alarm clock at 3.30 am. When I knew I was awake, I observed in detail my actions in the present moment before I slowly pulled myself up by turning my left side onto the bed. I gradually put my feet on the floor. When the feet touched the floor, I felt it all in my entire body. I knew before-hand, that I would walk to turn on the light switch, not just walk to it automatically, as I used to. Also I planned before I walked to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face and I always realized what I was doing. After the bathroom routine, I walked back to the bedroom and set an area for walking meditation. It was about 14 steps long from the end of the bed to one end of the wall. I intended not to say “Left walking, Right walking” or other Samatha words. It was only about the mindfulness. Each step was slow but precise. There were no other thoughts involved. I could feel the clear relaxation of the mind. When each foot touched the floor, I could feel it in my entire body in the present moment. Nothing came to my mind. The moving foot was as light as walking on the cotton. No pressure at all. The walking was purely about mindfulness and concentration. Tanha or cravings and Moha or delusion could not come close. It was the moving of Rupa Dhamma and Nama Dhamma only. This mindful walking meditation, done with the awareness of the present moment, lasting 45 minutes.

I then switched to sitting meditation to observe the breaths at the nostrils at the small area just above the upper lip. I exercised mindfulness with every breath. I let go of everything and stayed in the present moment.

I found that the best time to do the sitting meditation was around 5.30 – 6.00 am. The mind could be tamed easily. It was still clear and free from impurities, because we just woke up. Sometimes only Sanya or memory would come across the mind but that was very easy to get rid of during this early morning time. The most important thing was that we could stop the feelings before they started to come to the mind. This could be “Jod Sapawa Dhamma”, which I felt many times during my 45 minutes of walking and sitting meditation. Later on, I went for breakfast.

At 7.15 am. while I was on my way to the dining room, I did the walking meditation. I used the stairs instead of the elevator. By observing my own big actions of left and right walking, I always stayed in the present moment. For the smaller actions such as head turning or looking to someone or something, I just acknowledged that there was somebody walking past me, without glancing or greeting him/her as usual. Fortunately, people here already knew that we were in the Silent Retreat program because I put a sign “Silent Retreatant” on my robe. Therefore, it was fine to ignore them when we met.

I walked carefully into the dining room. I then took a plate, a spoon, a fork and some napkins. I put 3 serving spoons of oatmeal, then ham, fried egg and a piece of toast on my plate. Then I walked to get the orange juice and a coffee cup for my hot boiled medication that I brought myself. Fruits varied day to day from bananas to grapefruits. I took half grapefruit and walked carefully to my table without looking at other tables which were occupied by priests and the Center’s staff. I reached the last table with the sign “Silent Retreat Only”. This was the table exclusively reserved for us. I started contemplating on the food (Yata Pajjayung) and began to drink the juice. I tasted the sourness in my mouth and on my tongue, which caused a large amount of saliva production from both sides of the inner cheeks. This was to feel Vedana (feelings) through the tongue. Later I tasted the saltiness of the ham and the sweetness of the oatmeal. When I first put the food into my mouth, I would let it stay there for a moment to taste it before using the tongue to move the food to the left side of the jaw teeth (I am right handed). Then I chewed with mindfulness and knew when the teeth got on the food. I also counted how many times I chewed, which, as it turned out, took me about 9-11 times before the food became smooth enough to swallow.

When the food went through the esophagus, I felt the warmth and the hardness of the solidity passing down to my stomach. Then I put a new spoon of food into my mouth and closed my eyes. I repeated the process over and over again until I finished my breakfast. By concentrating on the eating process, the mind was fully occupied and could not take in other outside emotions. When the mind got used to this inner emotion training, it would be fast to concentrate. This was a good thing, when you were to be by yourself doing Vipassana Meditation, which corresponded well with the Buddha’s teaching of Maha Satipatthana Sutta.

Morning Practice

After finishing my breakfast, I met Ajahn for the interview at the Retreatant Lounge to share with her my experience, progress, or difficulties I had during my practice.

I told her about the walking meditation I did after I got her advice from the interview the day before, showed her my walking but still she said it was not precise. The preciseness was needed to balance mindfulness and concentration. Therefore, I had to go back to practice the walking meditation again with one hand holding to the wall. These 20 steps I made were consistent and very slow, with the slow and small movement of my feet. The mind was up to the speed and the movement of the feet. The mind and the body were balanced. I felt so clear and empty which I knew it was “Jod Sapawa Dhamma”. It meant that Sati was fast enough to detect Citti (mind). Sati knew that the thoughts were coming to the mind so it stopped the thoughts before they could reach the mind. I felt this many times. I thought that “Why didn’t I continue my thinking? I knew before it came to my mind and was able to stop it.” I continued this walking meditation until I completed 45 minutes. Then I went back to sitting meditation, observing the rise and fall of the abdomen. The result was satisfying because I could get rid of the sleepiness. I spent time equally for practicing sitting and walking meditation this time.

Evening practice

I was bored. Maybe I was too tired from too much practice and I needed some rest. However, I still tried practicing both walking and sitting, but walking could not last long because my feet hurt. So I continued with only sitting meditation on a chair. It was consistent and I got good concentration. I did it until 10 pm. before I went to sleep.
